Roger Baxter was appointed as the Chairman of Southern Palladium on 1 January 2024. Southern Palladium is a ASX and JSE-listed PGM development company focused on developing the tier 1 world class Bengwenyama platinum project in the far eastern limb of the bushveld complex. He is the is also the founding Chairman of the World Platinum Investment Council. Roger was previously CEO of the Minerals Council South Africa (MCSA), a role that he held from 1 May 2015 until 30 June 2023. He is recognised for his leadership role in not only rejuvenating the brand of the MCSA into a respected voice of the mining sector, but helping the industry achieve two of the safest years on record and pushing government for better governance and proper structural and institutional reforms to improve South Africa’s investment competitiveness.

Roger has over 30 years of high-level advocacy and strategy experience in the global, regional and local business and mining sectors. He was involved in the first mineral policy discussions with the ANC in 1992 and in most of the significant economic and minerals policy discussions with government since then. He has participated in, and often led, the business negotiation teams on a range of issues such as the 2002 Mining Charter, the 1998 Energy Policy White Paper, the 1997 Skills Development Act, the 2009 Mineral Royalty Act, the 2010 revised Mining Charter, etc.

Roger has participated in all the Presidential Job Summit and Investment Conferences and has played a leadership role in encouraging government to focus on the structural and institutional reforms needed to improve South Africa’s investment competitiveness. He was at the forefront of efforts to establish NECOM and pushed for specific reforms to solve the electricity crisis and was also behind efforts to establish NLCOC and reforms to the rail system.  He previously chaired the Business Unity South Africa’s (BUSA) Economic Policy Committee and Economic Growth Task Teams, the ARC of BUSA and played a leadership role in President Ramaphosa’s 7-a-side NEDLAC leadership team looking at how to revive the economy post COVID-19. He was previously a member of the Minerals Council Board, the BUSA Board, the Chairman of the Associations Coordination Group of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and was President of the Mining Industry Association of Southern Africa (MIASA). In 2020, Roger was the winner of the Mining Review Africa 2020 Mining Thought Leader of the Year award. These words aptly describe Minerals Council South Africa CEO Roger Baxter.” In 2018, Roger was awarded the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy’s (SAIMM) Brigadier Stokes Platinum medal for his contribution to the South African mining sector. Since the launch of MiningMX's “Rainmaker and Pot-stirrers” publication, he has been listed as one of Africa’s top 100 most influential people in the mining industry.

Marna Cloete is a registered Chartered Accountant and holds a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the University of Pretoria. In 2006, Marna joined Ivanhoe Mines, and in 2009 she was promoted to Chief Financial Officer and to President in 2020. Marna played an instrumental role as part of the Ivanhoe leadership team, achieving a number of strategic milestones as well as listing the Company on the TSX and concluding multiple strategic partnerships and financings with inter alia a Japanese consortium led by Itochu, Zijin Mining and CITIC Metal. She also serves on the Board of Centamin plc as an independent non-executive director and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee. Prior to joining Ivanhoe, Marna forged her career at PwC in 2002, in the Metals and Mining division, subsequently moving on to Group Five Construction.

Catherine joined J.P. Morgan in 2018 and has been covering South Africa-listed PGM and gold stocks since 2020. Catherine holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) from Rhodes University and an MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Oxford.

Henk de Hoop is the new CEO of SFA (Oxford). SFA (Oxford) is a world-renowned authority on platinum-group metals and provides in-depth market intelligence on battery raw materials and the hydrogen economy. Henk holds an MSc in Mining Engineering from the University of Technology in Delft and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. After starting his career in South Africa working on the gold mines, he spent the next 12 years working for various stockbroking firms, covering listed mining stocks in the gold, diamonds, PGMs, coal and diversified space. He became the top-rated PGMs analyst for 3 consecutive years from 2005-2007. He joined Rand Merchant bank as a resource sector investment banker in 2008,working on a broad range of M&A, debt, and equity raising transactions, before joining SFA in 2022.

Paul Dunne is the Chief Executive Officer of Northam Platinum Holdings Limited, a position he has held since March 2014.  His appointment at Northam follows a successful career at Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats), where he rose through the ranks, before assuming the role of Executive Director in charge of mining, concentrating and smelting operations at the Implats Rustenburg and Marula operations. Paul also serves on the board of the International Platinum Group Metals Association (IPA). He’s the current Vice President of the Minerals Council of South Africa and Chief Executive Officer of Northam Platinum Limited (a subsidiary of Northam Platinum Holdings). He holds a BSc Hons and a MBA.

Schalk Engelbrecht is the Finance Executive and a Director of Platinum Group Metals (RSA) (Pty) Ltd.  He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of the Free State Business School (2005) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of South Africa (1996). Schalk has over 28 years’ experience in the South African mining and minerals industry.  His experience base includes holding senior financial management and leadership roles in De Beers Group, SouthernEra Resources Ltd and Lonmin Plc.  He joined Platinum Group Metals Ltd as Financial Manager in 2013.  He has direct experience in business processes, financial modelling and analysis, shared services, contract management, management accounting, feasibility studies and due diligence.  He is a strong finance and business administration professional with solid mining and processing technical knowledge.

Neal Froneman was appointed executive director and CEO of Sibanye-Stillwater on 1 January 2013. Over the past five years he has led the transformation of Sibanye-Stillwater from a 1.5Moz South African-based gold producer into a leading precious metals miner with an international operating footprint ranking among the world’s top three PGM producers. His career spans more than 30 years during which time he worked at Gold Fields of South Africa Limited, Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) and JCI Limited. In April 2003, Neal was appointed CEO of Aflease Gold Limited (Aflease Gold), which, through a series of reverse take-overs, became Gold One International Limited (Gold One) in May 2009. He was primarily responsible for the creation of Uranium One Incorporated (Uranium One) from the Aflease Gold uranium assets. During this period, he was CEO of Aflease Gold and Uranium One until his resignation from Uranium One in February 2008. He held the CEO position at Gold One until his appointment at Sibanye-Stillwater. In May 2016, he was elected to serve as a Vice President of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa (now the Minerals Council South Africa).

Bernhard Fuchs joined Degussa’s precious metals business in 1999, after having worked as a banker and lawyer (Dr. in law). Following his assignment as assistant to the CEO, he was in 2002 appointed as CFO of Allgemeine Gold- und Silberscheideanstalt AG. In 2009 he moved to China as President Umicore Greater China, overseeing the growth of the group in precious metals as well as other specialty metals. Since 2014 he has been responsible for Umicore’s global Precious Metals Management as well as for the global sales organization of the Umicore group. He also serves as Chairman of Umicore AG, Umicore’s largest entity in Germany with 1.000 employees at three sites. He is a board member of the International Platinum Association (IPA), as well as of the German Precious Metals Federation.

Adrian joined SBG Securities in August 2014. He started his research career in 2010, firstly at Cadiz and then, after a merger, at BNP Paribas Cadiz. His past coverage has included Precious Metals, Diversified Mining as well as Oil and Gas where he developed a good understanding of the Gold, Platinum and Oil and Gas sectors. Before entering research Adrian spent three years with Hatch, that had given him a study bursary, as a Process Engineer focusing on the platinum industry. Adrian currently covers the PGM, Gold and Chemicals / Oil & Gas sectors.

Gina Handley is Head of Product Marketing and Volume Planning for the Volkswagen Passenger Brand at Volkswagen Group South Africa, having 25 years of automotive experience with the majority of this time spent in various roles at Volkswagen. She holds a BCom Honours degree in Economics from the University of Port Elizabeth (now known as Nelson Mandela University). The automotive industry is going through significant changes with the introduction of new technologies and innovations and Gina is excited to be part of the team that is leading this change at Volkswagen.

Kirsti Kuhn is the General Manager for Heraeus PGM South Africa. Heraeus South Africa was established in 1988 and has been actively manufacturing and refining PGM-containing products for 25 years. Today the company employs 79 people at its sites in Gqeberha and Boksburg. Kirsti started her career at Heraeus shortly after graduating from Nelson Mandela University with a Master of Science in Inorganic Chemistry. She is passionate about the dynamic nature of the precious metals industry and inspired to be a young woman leader in an organisation that has initiatives such as digitalisation, sustainability and diversity at the core of its strategic focus. She enjoys constant learning and has a particular interest in the field of natural science. Kirsti is a member of the Women in PGMs network and has more than 10 years’ experience in the precious metals industry.

Paul is a Senior Process Consultant with the hydrometallurgy team in Hatch’s Johannesburg office in South Africa.  He has over 40 years’ experience of research and plant design in Base (BMR) and Precious Metal refineries (PMR) throughout the globe. Paul has extensive experience with the R&D, evaluation and development of novel technologies and their applicability to individual feeds and economic environments.  This has included the design and/or implementation of 4TH generation process flowsheet alternatives, flowsheet optimisation, test work programme development (full value chain), financial evaluation and further product beneficiation. In addition, he has filled senior operations management roles in a wide variety of metal refineries with significant experience in the production and market environment.

Kolobe Nala Investment Company (Pty) Ltd (KNI) is a family-owned business focused on investments in mining, energy and aviation and is headed by Billy Mawasha, who has extensive mining experience with Anglo American, Rio Tinto, De Beers and AngloGold Ashanti to name but a few. Until recently, Billy was the Country Head in South Africa for Rio Tinto and the MD of Richards Bay Minerals. In addition, Billy serves on the Board of Metair Investments Ltd (MTA:SJ – Automotive Components and Battery Manufacturer) and is the Chairman of their Investment Committee and a member of the Audit and Risk and Nomination Committees. Billy is also a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. Billy’s experience, a strong network of relationships in the mining industry and his understanding of doing business across the continent, enables KNI to bring long-term value-adding perspectives, hands-on and pragmatic expertise and solid operational and technical know-how to projects they invest in. This is realised through strategic guidance and active participation in the board of directors and associated committees, in particular the investment, technical and risk committees and through working collaboratively with relevant parties and management teams.

Alex Mhembere was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Zimplats in 2007 and has over eighteen years’ experience in the platinum mining industry, having formerly been the Managing Director of Mimosa Holdings Limited. He was President of Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe, a position he held from May 2013 to May 2015. Alex has the following qualifications: Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA), Chartered Institute of Secretaries (CIS) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Craig Miller joined the management committee and board of Anglo American Platinum as Finance Director in March 2019, and will take over as CEO with effect from 1 October 2023.  With over 23 years of mining industry experience, he is a seasoned senior executive who has worked in South Africa, Brazil and the UK, with expertise spanning Anglo American’s PGMs, base metals and bulk commodities businesses. In his role as Anglo American Platinum’s Finance Director, he led strategy development and execution and drove successful cost and value optimisation across the business. As CEO, Craig will continue to prioritise ensuring safe, stable and capable operations while fostering a diverse, inclusive and high-performance culture, all aimed at delivering sustainable ounces and industry-leading returns through the cycle.

Thando Mkatshana has over 30 years’ experience in the mining industry. His career started with Anglo American Coal in 1988, where he gained extensive production experience at various collieries. He joined Xstrata Coal South Africa (Pty) Ltd in 2003, where he was responsible for the development from feasibility to implementation of the Goedgevonden Colliery (a flagship greenfield project and joint venture between ARM Coal (Pty) Ltd and what is now Glencore Operations South Africa (Pty) Ltd). Thando worked for Kalagadi Manganese (Pty) Ltd and ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited before joining ARM in 2011 as Executive: Coal Operations. He was appointed Chief Executive: ARM Coal in 2012 and assumed additional responsibilities as Chief Executive: ARM Copper in 2015. In February 2017, Thando was appointed Chief Executive: ARM Platinum.

Vusi is currently the Sector Lead: Mining & Chemicals (Client Coverage) within the Nedbank Corporate and Investment Bank (CIB) franchise. He has been at Nedbank in various roles for the last 11 years. Pre-banking he held positions as Treasury & Corporate Finance Manager for Total South Africa, Treasury Manager at Dunlop Tyres and Assistant Manager at KPMG. In a post-articles career spanning 21 years, he has been involved in various capacities on multiple transactions for a number entities in different sectors. Over the years he has been privileged to lead diverse professionals and teams in different geographies. Vusi holds an MBA from Wits Business School, a Diploma in Advanced Banking from the University of Johannesburg and a B.Com degree from the National University of Lesotho, a Certificate in Professional Leadership Coaching from Wits Business School and has been on executive advancement programmes with Total South Africa and Nedbank. He is registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants as an AGA (SA), as a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers of Southern Africa (ACTSA) and as a Professional Leadership Coach for Masters’ students at the Wits Business School.

Mzila Mthenjane is CEO for the Minerals Council South Africa. He joined the Minerals Council in August 2023 after working as Executive Head for Stakeholder Affairs at Exxaro Resources Limited. He has more than 30 years of experience in the resources industry, which has been attained in the mining and financial services sectors. He has held various board positions as non-executive director in various entities including Pamodzi Gold Limited, Fraser Alexander and Merafe Resources. He is the current Chairman of the Board of the Impact Catalyst and is the former Chairman of the Wits University Mining Engineers Association and the former President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. 

Nico Muller holds a BSc Mining Engineering degree from the University of Pretoria and has a 28-year mining career across a range of commodities, including platinum. He has a proven track record as a successful operator and is a highly-rated leader and strategic thinker. Nico was appointed to the board of Implats as both Chief Executive Officer and an Executive Director in April 2017. Prior to this he served as Executive Vice-President of Gold Fields’ South African operations (South Deep) for three years, where he fulfilled a pivotal role in re-energising and repositioning the mine for a sustainable future. He also served as the Chief Operating Officer at Royal Bafokeng Platinum, and in various other high-level positions at Anglovaal, African Rainbow Minerals, Avgold and De Beers.

Phoevos Pouroulis is the Chief Executive Officer of Tharisa plc, with responsibility for overall strategy and management. Phoevos has held various senior managerial and operational positions in his more than 19-year career. He has extensive experience in project management, mining design, commissioning and mining operations, including PGMs and chrome, having been involved in South Africa's mining industry since 2003. He has served as Commercial Director for Chromex Mining plc and was a founding member of Keaton Energy. Phoevos currently serves on the board of the World Platinum Investment Council. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Science and Business Administration (Boston University, USA).

Jaco Prinsloo has been the CEO and on the Sylvania Board since March 2020. Since January 2012, he has served in senior positions at Sylvania - initially as Executive Officer: Operations and as Managing Director of the South African operations from March 2014, until his appointment to his current position. Prior to joining Sylvania, Jaco was principal metallurgist at Anglo American for Anglo Operations Limited, which followed eight years at Anglo American Platinum Limited from 2002 in various senior metallurgical positions across the group. During the past 20 years in the mining industry. he has been exposed to various operational and technical aspects of both the South African as well as international mining landscape and he has gained experience in both the precious and base metals sectors. Jaco is a metallurgical engineer and holds a Bachelors of Engineering in Metallurgy from Pretoria University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration and an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (UP).

Trevor Raymond has been a member of the leadership team at WPIC since its launch in 2014, originally leading the organisation’s global research and investor development team before being appointed CEO in 2022.Trevor is a precious metals specialist with over 30 years’ experience in the equity and metals markets, with deep experience in gold and platinum mining companies, including roles in corporate finance, marketing and executive leadership. He joined WPIC from Anglo American Platinum, where he led the company’s commodity research and market development in London. Prior to this, Trevor was Anglo American Platinum’s Head of Investor Relations in South Africa.

Andries is PwC’s Africa Energy, Utilities and Resources leader and an experienced JSE-accredited audit partner. He has been with the firm since 1997 and partner since 2007. He has experience in numerous stock exchange transactions, including IPOs, fund raisings, and reporting accountant work for acquisitions. He has a specific focus on mining clients across commodities and mining methods. Andries is the project leader for the firm’s SA Mine and Global Mine publications which gives him excellent insight into industry-wide issues. Although he has a specific focus on mining and construction clients, Andries also has a variety of cross-industry exposure with previous involvements in retail, manufacturing, forestry, agriculture, banking and insurance clients. His core industries have given him the opportunity to work with cross-border teams on a regular basis.

Marge leads PGMs Advocacy Manager for Johnson Matthey and is also a member of JM’s PGM Market Research team. After graduating as an engineer from UCT, she started her working life with Implats, before emigrating to the UK in 2006 and joining Johnson Matthey, where she has held a variety of roles. Over the past ten years, her focus has been on analysing the energy transition and its implications for PGMs and she has also worked on climate scenarios for TCFD purposes.

Tim Schlick is tasked with shaping the organisation’s global strategy and helping its core markets to unlock growth opportunities for platinum jewellery. Prior to entering the jewellery category, he was CSO for the DDB group in China from 2010, where he led the advertising group’s strategy practice and advised global brands on marketing communications, product positioning and brand management. Before he relocated to China, Tim held various senior executive positions with the McCann Erickson Worldgroup in Germany. He started his career as a management consultant at Accenture. Tim is a renowned business strategist and marketing expert and has advised more than 30 Fortune 500 companies on how to create growth through brands and products. He is a regular keynote speaker at events on topics such as market entry and growth strategies, marketing success in the digital age and consumer opportunities in Asia

Sifiso Sibiya joined Impala directly from school in 1996 and has since completed a BSc Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Cape Town, a Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Programme in Manager Development from the University of Cape Town GSB and an MBA from UNISA based on the Open University UK material, specialising in marketing strategy. Sifiso has worked at the Impala Platinum Refineries in various roles leading to Group Executive: Refining and Marketing. In this position, Sifiso has the overall responsibility for the cost-effective refining of base and precious metals from the converter matter into high quality-saleable products and the global sales of the said metals. In addition, he holds several company directorships focusing on mining, refining marketing, and market development for PGMs.

Anton Smalberger’s area looks after the planning for all new energy vehicle-related infrastructure and services considering the global reduction in carbon emissions. He has been working for Toyota for more than 15 years where he supported different areas at after sales and now product planning. In total he has been working in the automotive industry for more than 20 years which included working for two OEMs and a component supplier.

James is a highly experienced and qualified executive with more than 25 years’ experience in the mining, industrial and financial sectors. Originally a process engineer in the mining industry, James has held various consulting, investment advisory and operational leadership positions. He has extensive experience in strategy development and execution, operational excellence, mergers and acquisitions and organisational leadership within the mining and industrial sectors.

Richard Stewart has 20 years’ experience in South Africa’s geological and mining industries, is a Fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa and is a Registered Natural Scientist. Prior to joining Sibanye-Stillwater in 2014, he served on the Gold One Executive Committee, from 2009 to 2014, in both Technical and Business Development related roles. Richard was also the CEO of JSE listed Goliath Gold Limited, from 2013 to 2014. Prior to that he was an Investment Consultant for the Private Equity Group, African Global Capital Proprietary Limited and held management positions at Uranium One and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Mining Technology division.  He was a co-founding member and director of Shango Solutions, a geological consultancy firm.

Grant is the Global Head of Sibanye-Stillwater’s recycling operations. Prior to his recycling role, Grant was focused on Sibanye-Stillwater’s sustainability agenda through his role as Senior Vice President Environment. This role followed as a logical extension from his role as the Vice President for the West Rand Tailings Retreatment Project (WRTRP). The WRTRP involved the recycling and responsible waste management of the vast quantity of tailings material scattered over the West Rand for the economic extraction of gold and uranium and the associated environmental and socio-economic benefits. Grant has long been associated with the Randfontein Surface Assets. In 2007 he was the lead on the uranium project for Harmony Gold. In this role within Harmony he lead the creation of Rand Uranium and in which Harmony sold a 60% interest.  Grant continued his journey with Rand Uranium as the Executive for Corporate Development. Gold One acquired Rand Uranium in 2011 and Grant joined Gold One as the head of Investor Relations. In addition to this role, Grant managed the joint venture that was established between Gold Fields and Gold One to exploit the vast surface tailings resources (WRTRP). Grant joined Sibanye-Stillwater following the acquisition of Rand Uranium by Sibanye from Gold One in 2013. Prior to joining Harmony, Grant was a senior manager within the strategy and innovation practice at Deloitte. His management consulting spanned 10 years over a wide range of industries. Grant has a BSc in Chemistry and Chemical Sciences and a post-graduate qualification in Business Administration from Wits Business School.

Wilma Swarts joined Metals Focus as Director of PGM Research in April 2020. Prior to this she headed the commercial services and marketing functions at Lonmin Plc. Prior to joining the mining sector, she worked in the automotive industry. She holds a M.Sc. in International Business Administration from the University of London and an honours degree from the University of Johannesburg.

Emma joined Implats in February 2019 and provides support across a number of group functions including marketing and commercial, investor relations and strategy. She joined Implats after an 18-year career as an equity analyst at a number of domestic and international banks, where she was involved in commodity and equity research on precious metals and producers, with a particular focus on PGMs.
